Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu highlighted the state’s abundant natural resources and commitment to converting them into sustainable revenue through clear policies. The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation officials, accompanying the Chief Minister, mentioned that the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project is set to produce 2,000 MW of power by December 2026, becoming the largest hydroelectric project in India. Chief Minister Khandu, in Dollungmukh, Kamle district, outlined a development roadmap in line with the Union government’s “Viksit Bharat” vision and the state’s “Viksit Arunachal Pradesh” goal.
In a significant move blending development and tourism prospects, the Chief Minister and his state Cabinet embarked on a 45 km high-speed river journey along the Subansiri river, promoting river tourism alongside hydropower development. The event signifies a milestone in advancing river tourism opportunities. Chief Minister Khandu expressed gratitude to stakeholders, especially NHPC officials, for the successful event organization. The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, initiated in 2001, exemplifies the “Viksit Bharat” vision, overcoming past obstacles to now enhance India’s power generation capacity significantly upon completion.
Other hydropower projects in Arunachal Pradesh, with a combined capacity of around 19,000–20,000 MW, are progressing at various stages across the state. Chief Minister Khandu acknowledged the support of local communities in facilitating substantial investments in districts like Kamle, Lower Siang, and Upper Subansiri. He highlighted the Subansiri project’s notable features, including the country’s longest reservoir stretch of nearly 45 km, a record potentially surpassed only by the proposed Upper Siang Multipurpose Project.
Underlining Arunachal Pradesh’s tourism appeal, Chief Minister Khandu praised its pristine rivers, dense forests, and diverse biodiversity as unparalleled. He stressed the importance of preserving the harmony between tribal communities and nature while advancing development. Emphasizing the significance of hydropower for energy security amid global uncertainties affecting conventional resources, he announced plans for a comprehensive survey and master plan for sustainable tourism development in the region, focusing on eco-friendly infrastructure and revenue-generating activities.
To further boost the region’s promotion, the state government aims to introduce high-speed yachts, enhance tourist accessibility, and attract filmmakers and investors. The picturesque landscape is anticipated to draw content creators, showcasing Arunachal Pradesh nationally and globally. Chief Minister Khandu lauded the Hydro Power Department and administrative officials for the successful event organization, urging collective efforts towards planned, sincere, and community-driven development. He envisioned the region as a significant river tourism hub, marking a new chapter in the state’s journey towards progress and prosperity.
