All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Chief Asaduddin Owaisi dismissed claims of being a BJP proxy during his Gujarat visit. Owaisi emphasized that AIMIM stands for marginalized communities, not just minorities, challenging the Congress’s failure to counter the ruling party effectively. He questioned Congress’s inability to defeat the BJP and its silence on issues like the Uniform Civil Code.
Owaisi, who is in Gujarat to launch AIMIM’s campaign for the upcoming local body elections, revealed plans to contest 539 seats across the state. Highlighting the party’s past electoral success, he mentioned winning 26 Assembly seats in 2021, including seven in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. Owaisi also raised concerns about the underrepresentation of Muslims in Parliament, noting the lack of Muslim MPs from Gujarat since 1991.
The AIMIM Chief criticized the proposed Uniform Civil Code, labeling it as unconstitutional and biased towards Hindu personal laws. He expressed objections to the application of Hindu Code provisions on non-Hindu communities, highlighting discrepancies in the legal framework. Owaisi vowed to challenge the UCC in court, citing concerns over its impact on minority rights and gender equality.
Referring to the Disturbed Areas Act in Gujarat, Owaisi accused the law of targeting specific localities and restricting property transactions for Muslims. He questioned the necessity of such legislation in a peaceful state like Gujarat and criticized its implications on communal harmony. Owaisi also refuted allegations linking AIMIM to communal tensions in West Bengal, dismissing them as baseless claims.
