Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, aged 93, passed away in Mumbai on Sunday. Known for her iconic songs like ‘Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko’ and ‘Do Lafzon Ki Hai Dil Ki Kahani’, she was a prominent figure in the music industry. Bhosle, who started her singing career in 1943, was considered one of the last remaining music icons of her generation.
An old video of Asha Bhosle discussing her sister Lata Mangeshkar on a singing reality show has recently gone viral on social media. In the video, she recalls Mangeshkar referring to them as the ‘last of the Mughals’ in the music industry. Bhosle, reflecting on her sister’s words, expressed that with Mangeshkar’s passing, she now stands as the final representative of their era.
Asha Bhosle’s contribution to music spanned over several decades and various languages. She revealed in 2006 that she had recorded nearly 12,000 songs in her illustrious career. Collaborating with renowned music composers like RD Burman and AR Rahman, she received accolades such as the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008 for her exceptional musical achievements.
Bhosle’s last rites are scheduled to take place at Shivaji Park in Mumbai on Monday at 4:00 pm, as confirmed by Maharashtra’s Culture Minister Ashish Shelar outside the Breach Candy Hospital where she was admitted.
