Mumbai Suburban District Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar emphasized the necessity of a robust emergency management system for the Bandra–Worli Sea Link, Versova–Bandra Sea Link, and the Coastal Road. He highlighted the need for aerial evacuation capabilities, especially after a recent gas tanker accident on the Pune–Mumbai Expressway left passengers stranded for over 36 hours. Shelar, in a communication to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, pointed out the challenges in providing immediate and effective responses during accidents, fires, or natural disasters along these vital routes.
Shelar raised concerns about the Coastal Road’s underground tunnels and over-sea sections, stating that quick evacuation of the injured, movement of security forces, and access for emergency services could be severely hampered. To address these issues, he urged the urgent construction of a helipad near the Sea Link at Bandra Reclamation. Shelar highlighted the ample space available at the proposed site and called for immediate action from the Chief Minister to direct the concerned authorities.
The proposed helipad would facilitate rapid evacuation of the injured using air ambulances during emergencies on the Coastal Road and Sea Link. Additionally, it would ensure swift access to nearby hospitals like Lilavati Hospital. Shelar emphasized that this initiative would enhance coordination among disaster management agencies, police, fire services, NDRF, and other departments, thereby bolstering Mumbai’s long-term emergency preparedness plan.
