Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has accused the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and its leadership of promoting candidates with backgrounds offensive to Assam’s cultural and religious sentiments. Sarma specifically targeted Kunki Chowdhury, a party candidate, alleging that her mother’s actions were against traditional values.
He further claimed that Chowdhury’s mother, Sujata Gurung, had posted photos consuming beef, challenged traditional beliefs, and supported divisive figures like Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid. Sarma criticized AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi for fielding such candidates, questioning the party’s commitment to Assam’s core values.
The allegations have sparked a political controversy in the state, with opposition parties expected to respond strongly. Kunki Chowdhury, the youngest candidate in central Guwahati, has not yet received an official response from AJP.
