Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticized the Congress for allegedly playing politics with the late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. Sarma questioned the Congress leaders’ visits to “Zubeen Kshetra” with cameras, stating that Zubeen Garg had expressed his disinterest in politics.
Sarma also accused Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge of disrespectfully mispronouncing Zubeen Garg’s name as “Zubeen Marg.” He warned that the people of Assam would not tolerate the politicization of the cultural icon and hinted at a forthcoming decision regarding Zubeen Garg within a month.
Furthermore, Sarma pledged to combat what he called “inclusive mind politics” if re-elected in Assam. He criticized the selective approach of political leaders visiting Zubeen Kshetra and questioned why they do not also pay respects at the memorial of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika.
Zubeen Kshetra, a memorial honoring Zubeen Garg, has become a significant emotional site for his fans and admirers, symbolizing his cultural influence in Assam. Sarma vowed to visit the site post his re-election as Chief Minister, emphasizing his stance against any attempts to politicize Zubeen Garg’s legacy.
The renowned Assamese musician Zubeen Garg passed away in Singapore on September 19 last year, marking a significant loss to the cultural landscape of Assam.
