Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed satisfaction with the significant voter turnout in the ongoing Assembly elections. He highlighted the enthusiasm displayed by voters, especially from Hindu and indigenous communities, as a strong endorsement of the democratic process.
Sarma noted a notable increase in participation among local and indigenous voters, considering it a positive development for democracy. He emphasized that the heightened engagement enhances the electoral system and reflects public confidence in governance. The Chief Minister also praised the peaceful polling and the enthusiastic response from voters, indicating a robust democratic culture in the state.
Sarma expressed confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led alliance’s chances, reaffirming his expectation of securing over 90 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly. He interpreted the voter response across constituencies as a clear mandate in favor of the ruling alliance. Sarma highlighted that the increased voter turnout would strengthen the democratic framework and lead to a more representative government.
Assam witnessed its highest-ever voter turnout in a Legislative Assembly election, recording an impressive 85.38% polling. This turnout surpassed the previous record set during the 2016 Assembly elections, marking a significant milestone in the state’s electoral history. Officials described the polling process as mostly peaceful, with only a few minor incidents reported from scattered locations. Female voters slightly outnumbered male participation, with women registering a turnout of 85.96% compared to 84.80% among men, while third-gender voters recorded a turnout of 36.84%.
