The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has stated that athletes must seek approval before finalizing sponsorship agreements with the federation. This decision aims to protect both athletes and sponsors, with the federation’s legal team available to guide athletes on potential risks. AFI recently mandated that athletes obtain approval before engaging in any sponsorship or third-party contracts.
AFI emphasized that this requirement is in response to concerns raised by sponsors and is intended to allow athletes to concentrate on training and competition rather than contractual matters. The federation clarified that while it supports athletes in earning through endorsements, it prioritizes safeguarding Indian athletes’ interests. AFI highlighted that it does not charge athletes or sponsors for the approval process.
While encouraging athletes to pursue endorsement opportunities, AFI ensures that its legal experts are accessible to advise athletes on contract implications. The federation reiterated its commitment to assisting athletes without any financial burden on either party. AFI’s aim is to facilitate athletes in navigating sponsorship agreements while protecting their rights and the integrity of Indian athletics.
AFI also advised sponsors to proceed with agreements only after confirming that athletes have obtained the necessary approval. The federation commits to providing confirmation within three days of receiving the request from sponsors, ensuring a streamlined process for all parties involved.
