With the 13th Parliamentary elections ongoing in Bangladesh, political parties express optimism about forming a government despite doubts on voting fairness. The National Citizens Party (NCP), part of the 11-party alliance, aims to take power as per local reports. NCP convener Nahid Islam, a candidate in Dhaka-11, emphasized fair elections for the coalition to govern.
Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) voiced worries over the electoral atmosphere, citing violence and financial influence. Gazi Ataur Rahman of IAB criticized parties like BNP and Jamaat for maintaining past electoral practices involving threats and attacks. Rahman highlighted incidents of violence, urging law enforcement to intervene.
The IAB, fielding 258 candidates nationwide, remains firm in its electoral stance, denying support for other candidates. Rahman stressed the need for active law enforcement to curb excessive spending on voters. Recent reports indicated IAB’s split from the Jamaat alliance, opting for independent participation in future elections.
Bangladesh’s election landscape is tense, with concerns that a power shift could escalate political tensions and extremist activities.
