Mohammad Harun Al Rashid, a seasoned Bangladeshi diplomat now in exile, criticized Bangladesh’s upcoming national election, calling it one of the most unpleasant in the nation’s history. Rashid, speaking to a Sri Lanka-based think tank, expressed concerns about the interim government’s Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, stating that accountability cannot be avoided. He highlighted that the election is not a genuine democratic process but a clash between two factions of the 2024 “jihadist coalition” that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Rashid compared the political parties involved, mentioning the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its allies on one side, and the radical Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami and its partners on the other. He drew parallels between BNP and Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, as well as between Jamaat and Hamas in Palestine, emphasizing their lack of democratic values and association with Islamist extremism. The diplomat accused Yunus of manipulating the election to ensure his continued influence in the government, aligning with Jamaat and its affiliates.
According to Rashid, the exclusion of genuinely democratic parties from the election process, along with foreign interference seeking compliant proxies, undermines the credibility of the electoral system. He criticized the involvement of external actors, particularly from the West, in shaping the election’s outcome. Rashid described the current situation in Bangladesh as a significant setback, transforming the country from a secular republic to one increasingly associated with terrorism, eroding decades of progress and secular identity.
Responding to questions about Bangladesh’s shift towards a state perceived through a terror lens, Rashid lamented the impact of Yunus’s rule, attributing it to economic devastation and the erosion of the country’s secular identity and historical legacy. He condemned Yunus as a manipulative figure who has deceived Western supporters with his rhetoric and reputation, despite his liberal image in the West.
