In an era of growing energy demands, driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and data centers, tech giants such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are turning to nuclear power as a reliable, carbon-free energy source. This pivot marks a transformative moment in clean energy innovation, as these companies invest in small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) to meet their sustainability and energy goals.
Amazon recently led a $500 million funding round for X-energy, a Maryland-based startup specializing in SMRs, aiming to deploy 5 gigawatts of clean energy projects by 2039. Additionally, Amazon’s partnerships with Energy Northwest and Dominion Energy promise to bring sustainable nuclear solutions to regions in the U.S., directly powering data centers while advancing their commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.
Google has also made strides, signing the first corporate agreement with Kairos Power to build seven small reactors, set to provide 500 megawatts of carbon-free energy by 2030. Similarly, Microsoft has entered a 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy to revive the Three Mile Island nuclear plant, repurposing it to power its cloud and AI infrastructure.
