Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft and a prominent philanthropist, inaugurated the first-ever India Day celebrations in the Greater Seattle area, recognizing India as a “global leader” in various innovative sectors.
Invited by the Consulate General of India in Seattle as the Guest of Honour, Gates praised India’s significant advancements in technology, agriculture, and healthcare, noting their vital role in improving lives worldwide.
Gates shared his experience on Instagram, posting photos of himself wearing a scarf in the colors of the Indian tricolour. He expressed his appreciation, saying, “India is a global leader with breakthrough innovations in areas like technology, agriculture, and healthcare that are saving and improving lives. It has been an honour to collaborate with the Indian government, philanthropists, the private sector, nonprofits, and the Indian American community. Happy Independence Day to all Indians!”
The inaugural event was a vibrant celebration of India’s diverse cultural heritage, featuring floats representing different states and regions, alongside performances that highlighted the country’s “Unity in Diversity” theme.
Prominent Indian-American community leaders contributed to the event, showcasing India’s rich cultural traditions.
The Consulate General of India in Seattle thanked Gates for his role in the event, posting on X, “Thank you, Mr Bill Gates, for flagging off the first India Day celebrations in the Greater Seattle area.”
The event also saw participation from notable political figures, including Congresswomen Suzan K DelBene and Kim Schrier, Congressman Adam Smith, Washington Lieutenant Governor Denny Heck, and Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs. Several mayors from nearby cities, such as Bellevue, Tacoma, and Kent, also joined the celebrations, demonstrating their support for the Indian community.
