A Bill will be presented in the Lok Sabha to grant statutory recognition to Amaravati as the exclusive capital of Andhra Pradesh. The proposed legislation, the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2026, seeks to amend the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 to establish Amaravati as the state’s capital. The amendment will specifically modify Sub-Section (2) of Section 5 of the Act to specify that “Amaravati shall be the new capital” instead of the previous wording.
The amendment clarifies that ‘Amaravati’ encompasses the capital city areas designated under the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority Act, 2014. It is noted that the amendment will retroactively take effect from June 2, 2024. The Bill’s objectives highlight that the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly passed a Resolution on March 28, 2026, urging the Indian government to incorporate ‘Amaravati’ as the new capital in Section 5 of the Act.
The amendment aims to provide legal certainty regarding Andhra Pradesh’s capital. The state’s TDP-led NDA government has been actively pursuing this goal, culminating in the Assembly’s resolution on March 28. The resolution, passed during a special session, called on the Central government to officially designate Amaravati as the sole capital city of the state.
