Preparations for the Umreth Assembly by-election in Gujarat are in full swing as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Harshad Parmar as its candidate for the vacant seat. The bypoll was triggered by the passing of sitting BJP MLA Govind Parmar on March 6, leaving the constituency seat empty. Govind Parmar had been representing the seat since 2017 and was re-elected in 2022, with his son, Harshad Parmar, now stepping in as the party’s nominee.
The Election Commission has set the polling date for the by-election on April 23, with the counting scheduled for May 4. With over 2.4 lakh registered voters in the constituency, preparations are underway to establish more than 300 polling stations. The BJP has appointed former state Minister Pradipsinh Jadeja as the in-charge for the Umreth bypoll, aiming to bolster campaign coordination on the ground.
Umreth Assembly constituency, situated in Anand district, is a significant seat in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, forming part of the Anand Lok Sabha constituency. The constituency, which includes areas of Umreth taluka and parts of Anand taluka, is an unreserved seat. Notably, the Thakor-Kshatriya community holds a substantial 54% of the electorate in the constituency, making their vote crucial in the upcoming by-election.
While the BJP has finalized its candidate and campaign strategy, the Congress is yet to announce its nominee for the Umreth bypoll. Internal consultations and candidate selection processes are underway within the Congress party as they gear up for the electoral contest.
