Ending months of uncertainty, the BJP declared Yumnam Khemchand Singh as the upcoming Chief Minister of Manipur. Khemchand Singh, a former Assembly Speaker, was chosen as the Legislature Party Leader by BJP MLAs in a meeting in New Delhi. He will take charge in a state under President’s Rule since February 13 last year.
Khemchand Singh’s election as the Legislature Party Leader was confirmed during a meeting attended by BJP MLAs from Manipur in the presence of party leaders. The BJP, along with NDA allies like the NPP and NPF, is set to formally endorse Khemchand Singh’s leadership.
A significant figure in the Meitei community, Khemchand Singh, a former Rural Development Minister, has been elected twice to the Manipur Assembly. He recently made a notable visit to tribal-majority hill districts, aiming to bridge gaps amid ethnic tensions.
The BJP initiated the process to elect a new Chief Minister following intense discussions. The party appointed Tarun Chugh as the Central Observer for the election of the Legislative Party Leader. With the support of NDA constituents, Khemchand Singh is poised to lead Manipur as Chief Minister.
Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, along with other key BJP figures, accompanied party MLAs to New Delhi for discussions on government formation. The imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur last year is set to conclude soon, with the state Assembly under suspended animation.
