Folk singer-turned-politician and BJP legislator Ashim Kumar Sarkar from Haringhata Assembly constituency in West Bengal’s Nadia district filed a police complaint citing threats to his life. Sarkar disclosed receiving continuous death threats recently. He lodged the complaint at Chakdaha Police Station in Nadia, providing two mobile numbers from which the threats originated.
Sarkar urged the authorities to swiftly identify the callers behind the threats and take necessary legal measures. He mentioned that the threats stemmed from misinterpretations of his remarks on social media regarding the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh and the plight of Hindu minorities there. The threatening calls, according to Sarkar, involved verbal abuse followed by life-threatening messages.
During a meeting at Benapole-Petrapole Border with Bangladesh in North 24 Parganas district, Sarkar made remarks on a religious scripture that sparked controversy. Despite potential disagreements, he emphasized the need for addressing differences through legal means. Sarkar suspected an organized group’s involvement in the threats and officially reported the issue to the police for action.
Sarkar, known for his vocal stance on the persecution of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, previously advocated for a surgical strike by the Indian Army in Bangladesh. He criticized the notion of occupying the Seven Sisters by certain Bangladeshi political figures as unrealistic.
