The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Central Election Committee has chosen Akshay Shivajirao Kardile as the nominee for the upcoming by-election in Maharashtra’s Rahuri Assembly constituency. This by-election comes after the passing of BJP legislator and former Minister Shivajirao Kardile last year, a prominent figure in the district and state cooperative sector. Akshay, the late leader’s son, will contest in the polls scheduled for April 23, with the results to be announced on May 4.
The selection of Akshay Kardile reflects the BJP’s strategy to strengthen its presence in the Ahilyanagar district, previously known as Ahmednagar district. Rahuri has a history of being a fiercely contested seat, witnessing strong competition between key players in Maharashtra politics. By nominating Kardile, the BJP aims to leverage local leadership to navigate the unique regional dynamics of the Rahuri segment and capitalize on the sympathy wave, positioning itself against the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) which is yet to finalize its candidate for the by-election.
Former NCP(SP) Minister Prajakt Tanpure has expressed interest in contesting the by-election but awaits approval from the party leadership and MVA allies, including Congress and Shiv Sena. This by-election is seen as a crucial test for the BJP’s position in the state’s Legislative Assembly as it gears up for broader electoral cycles. Simultaneously, the by-election in Baramati, scheduled for April 23, following the demise of former Deputy Chief Minister and NCP President Ajit Pawar, adds to the political landscape’s dynamics.
