The BJP has expressed support for Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat’s statements referring to India as a “Hindu Rashtra” and highlighting what he termed as “Islamic extremism” in West Bengal. Bhagwat, addressing a gathering, emphasized that India is a “Hindu nation” and asserted that no constitutional approval is necessary as it is a “truth.” He also questioned the intentions behind a suspended Trinamool Congress MLA’s plan to build a Babri Masjid-like mosque in West Bengal, alleging it was a move for political gain. The RSS chief emphasized that public funds should not be used for constructing religious sites.
Backing Bhagwat’s stance on West Bengal, BJP spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo cited recent incidents in Murshidabad where a similar announcement had been made. Deo criticized the Trinamool Congress for allegedly appeasing the Muslim community at the expense of insulting the Sanatanis. He claimed that the issue was raised strategically with elections approaching.
BJP MLA Ram Kadam echoed support for Bhagwat’s views, emphasizing the necessity of Hindu unity. Kadam accused Mamata Banerjee and her supporters of mistreating Hindus in West Bengal and politicizing references to Babri Masjid for personal gain.
Shiv Sena leader Manisha Kayande stressed the importance of Hindu unity in the face of emerging challenges, emphasizing the need to avoid division based on caste.
In contrast, the Opposition criticized Bhagwat’s remarks, asserting that India is governed by the Constitution, not ideological declarations. Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad questioned the premise of a “Hindu Rashtra,” highlighting that the country’s top positions are held by Hindus across political parties. Prasad urged Bhagwat to clarify if his vision aligns with constitutional values.
Founder of Janata Unnayan Party, Humayun Kabir, dismissed fears of unrest in response to Bhagwat’s comments, emphasizing that no riots would be allowed. Kabir alleged a connection between the RSS and the Bengal government, claiming that the state government has facilitated the RSS’s growth while neglecting the Muslim community.
