German Football Club Borussia Dortmund and sporting director Sebastian Kehl have mutually agreed to end their association immediately, as confirmed by the Bundesliga club. This decision follows discussions between the club’s management and Kehl. Kehl had been with Dortmund since 2018, holding various roles, including head of the licensed players department for four years before becoming sporting director in 2022.
Borussia Dortmund, under Kehl’s tenure, consistently qualified for the UEFA Champions League and reached the final in 2024. The club’s managing director for sport, Lars Ricken, explained that the decision to part ways was reached amicably without conflicts. Ricken highlighted the shared history and contributions of Kehl to the club, expressing gratitude for his dedication.
Sebastian Kehl, who spent 13 years as a player at Borussia Dortmund, winning three Bundesliga titles and the domestic double in 2012, expressed his emotional connection to the club. He acknowledged the decision to move on, stating that it was the right time for both parties. Kehl, in a statement, reflected on his long association with the club, expressing pride in the successes achieved together and wishing Borussia Dortmund continued success in its new direction.
