The Calcutta High Court has instructed Jadavpur University to uphold law and order and provide security for Saraswati Puja celebrations on the campus. University authorities were directed by a division bench of Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen to take necessary steps to maintain order, with police assistance if needed. A public interest litigation raised concerns about security at the university, prompting the state Higher Education Department to allocate funds for CCTV camera installation.
The court was informed that the CCTV camera installation at Jadavpur University is in progress and nearing completion. During the hearing, lawyer Kalyan Banerjee, representing the state, highlighted potential security issues during Saraswati Puja and requested police protection. In response, university officials assured that the CCTV camera installation would be finished within four weeks by a state agency.
Following the tragic death of a student in a hostel, lawyer Soham Das filed a public interest litigation in the Calcutta High Court. Anamika Mondal, a third-year student at Jadavpur University, passed away under suspicious circumstances last September. Allegations of murder surfaced as the family claimed foul play, stating that she was pushed into a water body on campus. The court had previously mandated increased security measures at the university, including the ongoing installation of CCTV cameras and the appointment of security personnel.
