The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is set to submit its chargesheet by the end of this month regarding the tragic stampede at a political campaign event in Karur last year. The incident, which occurred during an election meeting led by TVK leader Vijay, resulted in 41 fatalities and injuries to over 110 individuals due to a sudden surge and crowd congestion. Following Supreme Court orders, the CBI took over the investigation to ensure a thorough and unbiased inquiry.
Officials have indicated that the chargesheet may be presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Tiruchirappalli by February 12 or by the end of the month. The investigative process involved questioning key officials, including the Karur District Magistrate, the Superintendent of Police, and personnel from various government departments responsible for event management and public safety. Statements from families of the victims were recorded to understand the sequence of events and identify any potential oversights.
The CBI team conducted extensive on-site inspections and forensic assessments to reconstruct the circumstances leading to the tragedy. Notable figures like Karur District Magistrate M. Thangavel, Superintendent of Police K. Joshtangayya, TVK president Vijay, and event administrators N. Anand and Adhav Arjun have provided explanations to the CBI in New Delhi. The impending chargesheet is expected to shed light on accountability and set the stage for legal proceedings in the case.
