Chennai Super Kings’ captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been fined for a slow over-rate during an IPL 2026 match against Delhi Capitals at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Gaikwad received a fine of 12 lakhs for the slow over-rate in his team’s first victory of the season following three consecutive losses.
The IPL stated that this was Gaikwad’s team’s initial offense of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate violations. Gaikwad was penalized Rs 12 lakhs as a result. Gaikwad is the third captain to be penalized for a slow over-rate offense, following Shreyas Iyer of Punjab Kings and Shubhman Gill of Gujarat Titans.
Shreyas Iyer was penalized for a slow over-rate in two consecutive matches, first against Gujarat Titans in New Chandigarh on March 31, and then again in the subsequent game against CSK on April 2. Gill, on the other hand, was found guilty during the match against Delhi Capitals on April 8.
In the match, Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 115 and Jamie Overton’s 4-18 helped CSK secure a 23-run victory over DC, marking their first win of IPL 2026. Samson, the standout player of India’s 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup victory, scored 115 off 56 balls, including 15 fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 205.36, as CSK posted a formidable 212/2.
Despite a challenging target, DC made a strong start with Pathum Nissanka and KL Rahul surpassing the 50-run mark in the fourth over. However, the game shifted when CSK took three wickets in quick succession. Overton’s 4-18, the best figures of the season so far, led to DC being bowled out for 189 in 20 overs.
