The Congress has intensified its criticism of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that he is making unfounded accusations for political advantage and raising doubts about the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Assam government. Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi questioned the sincerity of the SIT’s investigation, suggesting that it might be more focused on holding press conferences rather than presenting evidence. He criticized the exchange of allegations as a tactic for electoral benefits.
Pratapgarhi highlighted the Chief Minister’s language shift from his time in the Congress to his current BJP affiliation, urging an end to efforts to incite and mislead the people of Assam. He claimed that Sarma is aware of the Congress’s plans to oust him from power and identified Gaurav Gogoi as a significant political threat. The Congress MP also accused the media of biased coverage, noting that similar language from an opposition Chief Minister would have received more attention.
Congress MP Rajeev Shukla refuted the allegations against Gaurav Gogoi and his family, defending their nationalist credentials. Shukla emphasized that Gogoi’s father had a long tenure as Assam Chief Minister and criticized the accusations as baseless. The Congress’s response came following Sarma’s recent political attack on Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi regarding his children’s British citizenship.
