Congress candidate Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan filed his nomination for the Umreth Assembly by-election in Anand district. He submitted his papers as the campaign for the April 23 bypoll gains momentum. Chauhan, an experienced figure within the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee, previously served as president of the Umreth taluka panchayat.
The by-election in Umreth was triggered by the passing of sitting BJP MLA Govind Parmar, a four-term legislator. The constituency, part of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, falls under the Anand Lok Sabha segment. Polling is scheduled for April 23, with vote counting on May 4, as per the Election Commission’s timetable.
With over 2.4 lakh registered voters, the Umreth constituency will see polling across 300+ booths using electronic voting machines with VVPAT systems. Chauhan’s candidacy sets the stage for a direct face-off with BJP’s candidate Harshad Parmar, son of the late MLA Govind Parmar. Harshad Parmar, currently active in local governance, is being projected by the BJP as a candidate with strong grassroots connections.
Scrutiny of nomination papers is set for April 7, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 9. Voter awareness campaigns are ongoing in villages to boost participation in the upcoming by-election.
