As the Madhya Pradesh government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, unveiled the annual budget for 2026-27 in the state Assembly, the opposition Congress launched a focused critique on Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. State Congress president Jitu Patwari expressed concerns over the state’s economic collapse and questioned Yadav’s capability to address it.
Responding to the budget presentation, Patwari emphasized the dire economic situation in Madhya Pradesh, attributing it to Yadav’s alleged lack of competence in economic matters. He suggested that the Chief Minister’s approach and skills are not aligned with the state’s economic needs, citing a disconnect between Yadav’s qualifications and the demands of the financial system.
Highlighting the escalating debt burden on Madhya Pradesh, Patwari underscored the government’s substantial borrowing of around Rs 72,000 crore over the past year, contributing to a severe economic crisis. He called for a transparent process to oversee the state budget’s revenue and spending, proposing the involvement of a multi-party expert team to avert a potential financial meltdown.
In response to the budget address, Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar criticized the Finance Minister’s acknowledgment of a projected fiscal deficit exceeding Rs 74,000 crore. Singhar characterized the budget as a collection of promises without a clear roadmap for implementation, particularly noting the absence of a comprehensive strategy to alleviate farmers’ financial burdens.
Singhar further lamented the government’s dismissal of legislators’ plea for increased development funds, citing a demand for a Rs 2 crore raise in MLA funds to support constituency development initiatives. He criticized the government for disregarding this request, viewing it as a slight not only to the legislators but also to the Assembly Speaker’s authority.
