The ruling Congress in Karnataka is encountering dissent from its own leaders in the Davanagere South Assembly constituency, a stronghold represented by late veteran leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa since 2008. Failure to address the rebel leaders may pave the way for the BJP to secure a historic win. This development holds significance for Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.
The Congress has nominated Samarth Mallikarjun, grandson of late Shamanur Shivashankarappa, for the constituency. In contrast, the BJP has fielded grassroots leader Srinivas T. Dasakariyappa, who belongs to an oppressed class. The decision of the Congress to opt for a family dynasty has drawn criticism from the Muslim community and progressive circles.
Samarth’s father, S.S. Mallikarjun, currently serves as Minister for Mines and Geology and Horticulture in Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s Cabinet. On the other hand, BJP candidate Srinivas T. Dasakariyappa emphasizes the party’s ability to provide opportunities to individuals from diverse backgrounds. There are speculations that the BJP’s candidate selection might indirectly benefit the Shamanur family.
The dominance of AHINDA (minorities, backward classes, and Dalits) has historically ensured Congress victories in the region. However, the BJP’s performance in the 2018 Assembly election showcased a strong competition. The Congress delegation’s efforts to persuade rebel candidate Sadiq Pylwan have not been successful, raising concerns about potential vote splits.
Local leaders express worries about the Muslim community’s sentiments and the impact on the election outcome. With multiple candidates in the fray, including those from the Muslim community and the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), the electoral dynamics have become complex. The Congress remains optimistic, banking on support from oppressed classes and the legacy of late Shamanur Shivashankarappa.
