A court in New Delhi has granted interim bail to student activist Sharjeel Imam, who faces charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in connection with the alleged conspiracy behind the 2020 North-East Delhi riots case. The bail allows him to attend his younger brother’s wedding and care for his ailing mother. The court has imposed strict conditions, including a ban on media interaction and social media use during the 10-day bail period from March 20 to March 30.
Imam, who has been in custody for over five years, had requested bail for six weeks to organize his brother’s wedding and spend time with his sick mother. The court has instructed him to provide a personal bond of Rs 50,000 and two sureties of the same amount. Additionally, Imam is prohibited from contacting the media, using social media, meeting anyone other than family and friends, or contacting witnesses during his temporary release.
The court has directed Imam to stay at home or at the wedding venues mentioned during the bail period. He must surrender to the prison superintendent on the evening of March 30. In his plea, Imam mentioned being the groom’s only sibling and the need to assist with wedding preparations. His counsel argued that his younger brother is the primary caregiver for their mother and that Imam wishes to support the family during the wedding festivities.
