The Delhi BJP criticized Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders, including municipal councillors, for spreading misinformation about the dissolution of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The BJP spokesperson emphasized that the Standing Committee is a permanent body that is never dissolved, contrary to claims made by AAP leaders. Whenever municipal elections occur, Standing Committee members are re-elected, and the committee functions for five years, with periodic retirements and replacements of members.
AAP leaders, including prominent members, retired from the Standing Committee at the end of the financial year on March 31. Following this, AAP leaders began spreading misinformation, causing confusion, according to the Delhi BJP spokesperson. The BJP representative highlighted that the complaints by AAP leaders regarding the Standing Committee reflect their frustration and the public’s disorientation towards them.
The Delhi BJP spokesperson pointed out that during the AAP’s tenure in the MCD, the all-powerful Standing Committee remained paralyzed for nearly 30 months. Despite citing municipal rules now, AAP leaders had previously hindered the formation of civic committees after the 2022 Municipal Corporation elections. The financial powers of municipal commissioners and department heads have increased over time, including in Delhi, due to current financial conditions and project values.
