Delhi Lieutenant Governor, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, visited the Bhalswa landfill site to assess the progress of bioremediation efforts and waste management strategies. He emphasized the need for sustained efforts to address waste accumulation in the national capital, despite progress made in the past year at landfill sites like Bhalswa, Ghazipur, and Okhla.
Sandhu highlighted that these sites were previously labeled as “mountains of garbage” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leading to extensive bioremediation work starting in 2022. While agencies have been working on processing legacy waste, complete restoration of the sites remains a long-term challenge.
The Lt Governor advised the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to consider advanced global waste management technologies and international best practices to enhance operational efficiency. He stressed the importance of adopting modern methods to reduce Delhi’s landfill burden within a specific timeframe.
Sandhu also directed authorities to focus not only on clearing existing waste but also on preventing the continuous inflow of fresh garbage at the landfill sites. He called for stricter waste segregation measures citywide to improve waste management systems.
Emphasizing the role of community associations, Sandhu urged increased engagement to ensure households and businesses segregate waste effectively. Proper waste segregation can expedite waste processing and enhance the effectiveness of bioremediation efforts.
To prevent fire incidents during the upcoming summer season, Sandhu emphasized the need for enhanced safety measures at landfill sites. He instructed implementing agencies to prioritize the provision of health and safety protections for workers.
During his visit, Sandhu interacted with workers at the landfill site and assessed their working conditions, ensuring the implementation of necessary safety measures for their well-being.
