Discontent arose within the Congress party in Erode when the announcement of Gopinath Palaniyappan as the candidate for the Erode (East) Assembly constituency led to protests from local party members. The decision was met with opposition from district-level leaders and longstanding party workers who believed a local candidate with stronger roots should have been chosen.
Protesters gathered near the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Karungalpalayam to express their dissatisfaction with the party’s choice. They argued that grassroots leaders who have actively served the district should have been given the opportunity to represent the constituency, aligning better with the preferences of local voters.
The demonstration, led by Makkal G. Rajan and other senior party members, was described as peaceful. Rajan expressed surprise at the selection of Palaniyappan, highlighting that five experienced local candidates had been shortlisted by the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee. The protesters emphasized the importance of prioritizing candidates with deep local connections to enhance the party’s electoral prospects.
Addressing the gathering, Rajan clarified that the protest was not against the state Congress president but aimed at the decision-making process that led to the candidate’s nomination. The agitators insisted that the party reconsider its choice, indicating that they would continue their protest until a local candidate from the shortlisted names was selected. Despite their discontent, they affirmed their loyalty to the Congress and pledged to support the party if a local nominee was fielded.
The incident underscores internal concerns within the party regarding candidate selection and poses potential obstacles for the Congress as it endeavors to strengthen its support base ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
