At least 77 people lost their lives, and 137 others sustained injuries due to floods in various Afghan provinces from March 26 to April 4. The floods caused extensive damage, destroying hundreds of homes and affecting thousands of acres of farmland, as per Afghanistan’s National Disaster Preparedness and Disaster Management Authority.
Authorities reported that four individuals are still missing, and more than 3,400 houses were harmed in different parts of Afghanistan, highlighting the significant impact of the heavy rains. The floods also led to blocked roads and disrupted transport links in multiple provinces, hindering rescue operations and access to affected individuals in remote areas.
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid mentioned that over 3,000 ‘jeribs’ of farmland were ruined, and more than 1,000 livestock perished due to the severe weather conditions. This recent flooding in Afghanistan mirrors previous rainy seasons, where heavy rainfall caused widespread devastation, resulting in numerous casualties and destruction of homes and farmlands.
On January 22, a National Disaster Management Authority spokesperson confirmed that heavy snowfall and rains had claimed the lives of at least 11 people and injured three others across various provinces. Severe weather conditions impacted residents in provinces like Parwan, Wardak, Kandahar, Jawzjan, Faryab, and Bamiyan, leading to the partial destruction of homes and loss of livestock, severely affecting local livelihoods.
