Breaking Barriers: Dr. Mumtaz Patel’s Historic Election

In a landmark achievement, Dr. Mumtaz Patel has been elected as the 123rd President of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), becoming the first Indo-Asian Muslim to hold this prestigious position. Her election marks a significant moment in the RCP’s 500-year history, reflecting the evolving diversity and inclusivity within the UK’s medical community.

A Journey Rooted in Excellence

Born in Preston, Lancashire, to Indian immigrant parents, Dr. Patel’s academic and professional journey is a testament to dedication and excellence. She graduated with honors from the University of Manchester in 1996, pursued a PhD focusing on the genetics of lupus nephritis, and became a consultant nephrologist at Manchester Royal Infirmary in 2007. Her commitment to medical education led her to earn a Master’s in Medical Education and take on pivotal roles, including Postgraduate Associate Dean for NHS England in the North West.

Leadership and Vision

Dr. Patel’s association with the RCP spans over two decades, during which she has held various influential positions. As the Global Vice President from 2020 to 2023, she was instrumental in developing the Global Women Leaders Programme, aiming to empower female physicians worldwide. In 2023, she was elected as the Senior Censor and Vice President for Education and Training, where she championed initiatives to enhance medical training and support early-career doctors.

Commitment to Modernization

Assuming the presidency, Dr. Patel has articulated a clear vision for the RCP’s future. She emphasizes the need to modernize the institution, making it more inclusive and transparent. Her priorities include constitutional and governance reforms, advocating for early-career doctors, and implementing recommendations to improve the role and integration of physician associates within the healthcare system.

A New Chapter for the RCP

Dr. Patel’s election comes at a pivotal time for the RCP, as it seeks to rebuild trust and reaffirm its commitment to its members and the broader medical community. Her leadership promises a renewed focus on inclusivity, education, and global collaboration, setting the stage for a transformative era in the college’s history.
