The Election Commission of India announced the successful completion of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) setup for the upcoming 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections. Over 41,000 ballot units are prepared for the election on April 9. The EVM commissioning process took place from March 31 to April 4 at designated locations under the supervision of contesting candidates or their representatives.
The commissioning process included the assistance of engineers and technical personnel from the Electronics Corporation of India Ltd. (ECIL) to ensure accuracy and reliability. A total of 41,320 Ballot Units (BU), 43,975 Control Units (CU), and 43,997 Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) units have been readied for use in the polls. Additionally, flying squads and surveillance teams have seized Rs 97 crore worth of cash, contraband, and freebies in Assam till date.
The Election Commission emphasized its commitment to fair elections and conducted review meetings with officials to ensure a violence-free electoral process. The seized items include cash amounting to Rs 4 crore, liquor worth Rs 20 crore, drugs valued at Rs 56 crore, and precious metals and freebies worth Rs 17 crore. The preparations aim to uphold transparency and integrity in the electoral process.
