The Election Commission of India has requested action taken reports from district magistrates in South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore districts of West Bengal. This follows the ECI’s directive to register FIRs against four electoral officers accused of irregularities in voter enrolment. The directive targeted officers in Baruipur East and Moyna Assembly constituencies.
Almost 72 hours after the ECI’s order, the DEOs of the concerned districts are yet to act. Consequently, the Commission has urged them to promptly submit their action taken reports. Last year, the ECI instructed the West Bengal government to suspend the officers and file FIRs, a directive that was only partially implemented.
The four officers faced allegations of manipulating the voters’ list, leading to their suspension. However, FIRs were not lodged as directed by the ECI. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the ECI’s stance, labeling it as biased towards the BJP. Despite the government’s reluctance, the ECI reiterated its directive for FIR registration against the accused officers.
