European leaders have expressed their support for the two-week ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran, emphasizing the European Union’s readiness to assist in peace efforts in the Middle East. European Council President Antonio Costa urged all parties to adhere to the ceasefire terms to establish lasting peace in the region. He thanked Pakistan and other involved parties for facilitating the agreement.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the ceasefire as a crucial step towards de-escalation and stressed the significance of negotiations for a sustainable resolution to the conflict. She highlighted the need for continued coordination with partners to achieve this goal.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, characterized the US-Iran ceasefire agreement as a positive move away from escalating tensions. Kallas emphasized the importance of creating an environment conducive to diplomacy by reopening the Strait of Hormuz for passage.
The decision to pause planned attacks tied to reopening the Strait of Hormuz, announced by US President Donald Trump, was met with global relief. Trump’s conditional two-week suspension of escalation, contingent on Iran’s agreement to open the key shipping route, came shortly before the self-imposed deadline, following backchannel diplomacy efforts.
