Panic spread in Chandigarh as a loud explosion, suspected to involve crude material, occurred outside the BJP’s office in Sector 37, according to Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwardeep Kaur. The blast’s sound was heard over a considerable distance, causing alarm among locals and passersby.
SSP Kaur, present at the scene, stated that the police were alerted about the explosion-like noise around 5 p.m. Preliminary investigations suggest that some crude material might have been thrown in the area. Teams from the NIA and FSL have been dispatched to the location for further examination.
Authorities swiftly responded to the incident, with personnel from the police and fire department, along with senior officials, rushing to the spot. The area was cordoned off, and an investigation was launched to determine the explosion’s cause and nature.
CCTV footage from nearby locations is under review to identify any suspicious activities before or after the blast. The explosion caused damage to vehicles parked outside the BJP office, as seen in photographs showing police presence and affected scooters and cars in the vicinity.
BJP leader Vineet Joshi confirmed that some vehicles were harmed in the incident. He mentioned that the sound of the explosion was audible in the area, prompting the police’s intervention. Reports suggest the explosion was of low intensity.
In response to the event, Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar condemned the attack, linking it to previous incidents targeting communal harmony. Jakhar criticized the government’s failure to prevent such attacks, expressing concerns about the law and order situation in Punjab and Chandigarh.
The police have issued an alert across Chandigarh and heightened surveillance in sensitive areas as a precaution. While sources hint at motorcycle-borne individuals being involved, this has not been officially confirmed.
