The Naba Nirman Krushak Sangathan (NNKS), a farmers’ group, protested in Bhubaneswar against the state Transport Department’s alleged heavy fines for Pollution Under Control Certificates. During the demonstration, members clashed with the police while attempting to approach the residences of the Chief Minister and Transport Minister.
The protest caused chaos in the area as protesters tried to breach police barricades near the Chief Minister’s residence. Tensions rose as NNKS activists fought with the police, leading to the detention of several activists to restore order.
NNKS leaders vowed to continue their protest until the government reconsiders and withdraws what they view as excessive penalties related to pollution control enforcement. They demanded an end to the harassment of citizens over Pollution Under Control Certificates, labeling the fines as unjust and detrimental to the public.
National Coordinator of NNKS, Akshay Kumar, criticized the government’s policy, denouncing the fines as anti-people and imposed without regard for citizens’ financial situations. He warned of escalating the movement across Odisha if the rules are not revoked, emphasizing the potential widespread impact on households.
The Odisha government initially announced strict enforcement of Pollution Under Control norms during Road Safety Month but later postponed the implementation due to challenges faced by vehicle owners. The government has now extended the relaxation for checking Pollution Under Control Certificates until April 1.
