Sujata Bhuyan, a fish farmer from Sambalpur, Odisha, expressed joy after Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned her work during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ episode. She felt honored that her efforts in fish farming were acknowledged nationally, motivating her to work harder. The Prime Minister praised fishermen for their role in building a self-reliant India and shared Sujata’s inspiring journey of overcoming challenges to succeed.
Sujata, residing in LIC Colony, Sambalpur, started her fish farming venture in 2022 after being inspired by activities at the Hirakud Reservoir. Despite initial difficulties managing household duties and farm responsibilities, she persevered. With support from the Fisheries Department and a bank loan, she expanded her business. Sujata’s dedication led to her earning around Rs 6 lakh in the first year and becoming an inspiration for women in the state.
Today, Sujata produces 25 to 30 tonnes of fish annually through cage culture, supplying markets in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal. She emphasized the importance of government support, including training and financial aid, in her success. Prime Minister Modi highlighted her determination and success as a homemaker, offering hope and motivation to women in her community. Sujata encouraged other women to explore opportunities in fisheries for financial independence and self-reliance.
