At least six individuals lost their lives due to a gas explosion that led to a partial building collapse in Karachi, Pakistan. The incident occurred in the Gul Rana Colony of the Soldier Bazar area, suspected to be caused by a gas leak. Emergency response teams swiftly arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations, managing to extract 11 individuals from the debris and transfer them to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The explosion, which took place on the first floor of the building on Wednesday night, resulted in a section of the structure collapsing, as confirmed by rescue sources. Efforts to locate any remaining trapped residents continued for hours, utilizing all available resources in the search operation. The injured were promptly taken to the Civil Hospital for medical attention.
Concerns regarding gas safety and inadequate infrastructure in residential areas have been reignited by this tragic event, as reported by the leading daily Dawn. Deputy Commissioner East Nasrullah Abbasi expressed concerns about the potential presence of two more individuals still trapped under the debris. The collapse of the building was attributed to severe damage caused by the cylinder explosion.
Despite facing challenges in accessing the congested locality, authorities persisted in their rescue endeavors. This incident follows a previous tragedy on January 17 when a massive fire erupted at a Karachi shopping mall, claiming the lives of at least 80 individuals with several others still unaccounted for. The fire at the Gul Plaza shopping center on Muhammad Ali Jinnah Road caused extensive damage, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced safety measures in such establishments.
