GitHub, a prominent platform for software development, revealed that India hosts 27 million developers actively engaged on the platform. This year alone, over two million developers from India have joined GitHub, representing a significant portion of new global developers. India stands out as the fastest-growing developer community globally, with a strong momentum in its growth trajectory.
The company highlighted India’s pivotal role as the world’s largest open-source contributor base, ranking second globally in open-source contributions after the United States. Indian developers have collectively made more than 7.5 million contributions to open-source AI projects on GitHub, solidifying India’s position as a major contributor in this field. Notably, India has been instrumental in creating open-source technologies that have gained widespread adoption worldwide.
Moreover, GitHub serves as a collaborative hub for over 180 million developers, with a substantial presence among Fortune 100 companies. The platform’s tool, GitHub Copilot, has been adopted by more than 77,000 organizations, emphasizing its significance in the developer community. Microsoft’s Chairman and CEO, Satya Nadella, previously projected that India is poised to become the world’s largest developer community by 2030, underscoring the country’s talent pool and leadership in AI innovation.
Nadella emphasized India’s potential to drive “societal-scale” solutions through AI advancements, leveraging platforms like GitHub, Azure, and Microsoft’s AI tools. He envisions a future where developers have access to a diverse ecosystem for AI model selection, evaluation, and deployment, moving beyond individual models to foster a collaborative environment for innovation and growth.
