The government confirmed sufficient seed stock availability for the upcoming Kharif season despite challenges in global supply chains. Additional Secretary of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare, Maninder Kaur Dwivedi, highlighted the country’s self-reliant seed system supported by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and both public and private sectors.
Furthermore, there is a robust pipeline in place with ample seed and breeding materials at various stages to address any potential disruptions. Dwivedi also mentioned that monitoring of wholesale prices for agricultural commodities, including top crops like tomato, onion, and potato, is ongoing, with prices stabilizing and showing improvement.
Looking ahead to the Kharif Season 2026, the government reported a surplus of approximately 19.29 lakh quintals in seed availability, surpassing the sector’s requirement of 166.46 lakh quintals. Additionally, preparations for the Rabi season in terms of seed inputs have been completed, ensuring continuity in agricultural activities.
