Secretary (South) at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Neena Malhotra, represented the Government of India by signing the condolence book at the Suriname Embassy in New Delhi for the late former Suriname President Chandrikapersad Santokhi. Santokhi, who passed away at 67 on March 30, served as Suriname’s President from 2020 to 2025 and was known for his leadership in the Progressive Reform Party.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on March 31, highlighting Santokhi’s contributions to strengthening the ties between India and Suriname. Modi fondly remembered their personal interactions and Santokhi’s dedication to enhancing bilateral relations, noting the late leader’s affinity for Indian culture and his oath-taking in Sanskrit.
Santokhi, born in Suriname to an Indo-Surinamese Hindu family with roots in Bihar, was recognized for his efforts in fostering connections between India and Suriname, particularly in trade, energy, and cultural exchanges. He received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman and had a significant presence at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas as a chief guest, reflecting his commitment to promoting Indian heritage and relationships.
