A Gujarat Police sniffer dog named ‘Check’ has achieved a national gold medal at the 69th All India Police Duty Meet in Nagpur. The dog excelled in the tracking category, marking the first gold win for Gujarat Police in 16 years. Additionally, ‘Check’ secured a bronze medal in the overall tracking category at the championship held in March and April 2026.
The event, which witnessed participation from police K9 squads and forensic experts nationwide, featured competitions evaluating skills like explosive and narcotics detection, tracking, agility, and obedience. In the tracking category, ‘Check’ outperformed 45 dogs from different state police forces and paramilitary units to clinch the top position.
Gujarat Police entered six dogs across three categories – tracking, explosive detection, and narcotics detection, with two entries in each. State Director General of Police (DGP), Dr. K.L.N. Rao, commended ‘Check’ and his handler Ramesh Khant for their remarkable achievement. The duo was honored with a medal at the Police Bhavan in Gandhinagar.
Preparations for the national competition began well in advance, with a state-level police dog competition held under the guidance of Director General of Police (Training), Neerja Gotru. Out of nine dogs selected for the championship, six underwent specialized training to compete in various events. Gujarat Police, with approximately 160 trained dogs, utilizes them for tasks such as explosive detection, narcotics detection, and tracking in criminal investigations.
This victory signifies a significant milestone for Gujarat Police, marking their first gold medal win at the national Police Duty Meet in 16 years.
