Gujarat’s ‘181 Abhayam’ women’s helpline has completed 12 years of operation, offering vital assistance and protection to women throughout the state. Since its establishment on March 8, 2015, the helpline has supported numerous women dealing with issues like domestic violence, harassment, cybercrimes, and marital conflicts. Official records show that over the past 12 years, the helpline has aided more than 18,10,913 women by providing guidance and assistance.
In critical situations, the helpline has successfully rescued and relocated 1,09,886 women to safe shelter homes, and resolved 2,29,660 cases promptly through counseling. Officials highlighted that the helpline has been a strong safeguard for women in Gujarat, with interventions in 3,60,964 cases to ensure immediate help and the safety of distressed women. Operating round the clock, the helpline is staffed by women police constables and trained counselors.
The state has introduced 59 modern rescue vans with GPS tracking, serving as mobile safety centers, a pioneering initiative in the country. Technological advancements, including the 181 mobile application with features like a “panic button” and “phone shaking,” have enhanced the helpline’s effectiveness. These tools have led to quicker responses and timely assistance during emergencies.
Combining technology with skilled personnel enables women to access immediate help, even in life-threatening circumstances, as stated by officials. Additionally, the helpline offers information on legal rights, government programs, and support services while maintaining strict confidentiality for women seeking help. Women from other states residing in Gujarat can avail of these services free of charge.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, the state government has upheld the helpline as a crucial element of women’s safety, ensuring that every woman in Gujarat feels secure and supported.
