Following a squall that passed through Kolkata and surrounding areas, the Meteorological Department has predicted an escalation of rain and thunderstorms, especially in south Bengal later today. The current rainy spell is attributed to a western disturbance, causing disruptions like the delay faced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s aircraft at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.
The inclement weather is set to persist, with additional rainfall expected over Saturday and Sunday. An ‘Orange Alert’ has been issued for six districts in south Bengal, including Kolkata, where strong winds reaching 50 to 60 km per hour are anticipated alongside heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning. The sudden downpour has brought relief from the scorching heat, significantly lowering temperatures in Kolkata to 20.2 degrees Celsius, a notable drop from the average.
Temperatures are likely to remain cool in the upcoming days due to a cyclonic circulation in southern Gangetic Bengal, leading to potential storms and rain across south Bengal districts. The western districts are at a higher risk of adverse weather conditions, with forecasts also pointing to stormy weather in north Bengal. The Met department has predicted rainfall in various districts on Saturday, with gusty winds expected to accompany the showers. Sunday may see a slight increase in rainfall in some parts of south Bengal, while Monday could witness light rain in isolated areas of specific districts, with dry weather anticipated in others. The weather is expected to improve thereafter.
