At least 11 people have died, and three others are injured due to heavy snowfall and rains affecting various provinces in Afghanistan. The severe weather conditions have impacted regions like Parwan, Wardak, Kandahar, Jawzjan, Faryab, and Bamiyan, leading to the destruction of homes and loss of livestock. The storms have also blocked important roads, prompting urgent clearance efforts to restore connectivity and aid delivery.
Most parts of Afghanistan have been experiencing continuous rain and snow since Wednesday, with the meteorological department forecasting further precipitation in the upcoming days. Doctors Without Borders, also known as Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), has raised concerns about the humanitarian crisis faced by Afghan refugees expelled from Pakistan, especially during the harsh winter season. The refugees are being placed in inadequate temporary camps lacking proper shelter, healthcare, clean water, and food, as highlighted in a recent report by MSF.
The forced deportations are affecting various groups, including undocumented migrants and Afghan citizens, exacerbating the dangers posed by the winter weather. Xu Weibing, the head of MSF’s mission in Pakistan, emphasized the fear and challenges Afghan families encounter, urging international support for humanitarian aid. MSF emphasized the critical need for adequate shelter, medical assistance, and food during the winter season to prevent further loss of life among vulnerable Afghan refugees.
