More than 79.84% of the 46,142 eligible voters participated in the bypoll for the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency in North Tripura. The polling, held across 55 stations, saw no major incidents and continued smoothly from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Some Electronic Voting Machines faced technical issues at a few stations, but were promptly addressed by Election Commission technicians. The final voter turnout percentage is expected to slightly increase as reports from all polling stations are compiled.
A total of 46,142 voters, including 23,758 women, had the opportunity to vote for six candidates contesting the seat. The election authorities, in collaboration with state police, ensured a fair and transparent polling process.
Out of the 55 polling stations, 11 were exclusively managed by women staff, while others were operated by differently-abled and youth teams, emphasizing inclusive electoral participation efforts. The Dharmanagar Assembly constituency has been historically dominated by the Congress, BJP, and CPI-M parties.
Key contenders in the bypoll include candidates from major political parties like BJP, Congress, and CPI-M-led Left Front, as well as representatives from smaller parties and an Independent candidate. The electoral battle is intensified due to the multi-cornered contest.
The bypoll was triggered by the passing of sitting MLA and Tripura Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen, who died in December 2025 at the age of 72. Sen, a four-time elected member, had represented both Congress and BJP in previous elections.
The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, determining the fate of the six candidates vying for the Dharmanagar Assembly seat.
