Around 81% of the 22,390 eligible voters participated in the bye-election for the Koridang Assembly constituency in Nagaland’s Mokokchung district. No major incidents were reported during the polling across 30 stations, with voting continuing until late afternoon in some areas.
Officials expect the voter turnout percentage to slightly increase once all reports from the polling stations are compiled. Security was heightened with the deployment of state and central security forces due to pre-poll violence that occurred earlier in the week, resulting in casualties and property damage.
The bye-election was called following the passing of sitting MLA Imkong L. Imchen in 2024. The electoral fate of six candidates, including the late legislator’s son, was decided by the 22,390 voters. The district administration imposed measures like night curfews and border sealing to ensure a smooth electoral process.
Candidates from various political parties, including the BJP, NPP, and Congress, contested the election, making the competition intense. The late Imchen, a seasoned politician, had a successful electoral career, having been elected to the Nagaland Assembly multiple times. The constituency is reserved for Scheduled Tribes.
