Historic Milestone: Balvir Singh Becomes New Jersey’s First Sikh Legislator

In a landmark event on January 30, 2025, Balvir Singh, an Indian-origin public school educator and mathematician, was sworn into the New Jersey General Assembly. Administered by Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin, Singh now represents the 7th Legislative District in Burlington County, serving alongside Assemblywoman Carol Murphy. This historic occasion marks the first time a Sikh has served in the New Jersey Legislature.
A Journey Rooted in Education and Public Service
Singh’s path to the Assembly is deeply intertwined with his immigrant background and dedication to public service. Born in a small village in Punjab, India, he immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of 14. Settling in Burlington City, Singh attended Burlington City High School. He pursued higher education in mathematics, earning degrees from The College of New Jersey and Rutgers University, and obtained a supervisory certificate from Rowan University.
His professional career includes roles as a public school educator and mathematician. Singh’s commitment to education is evident from his tenure on the Burlington Township Board of Education from 2015 to 2017, where he served as Chair of the Finance Committee. During this period, he focused on maintaining fiscal responsibility while ensuring quality education.
Advocacy and Achievements in Public Office
Before his election to the General Assembly, Singh served on the Burlington County Board of County Commissioners. His tenure was marked by significant contributions to affordable housing, economic development, and public health initiatives. Notably, Singh played a pivotal role in securing over $13 million in rental assistance for residents in need. He also spearheaded the launch of zero-interest loans for local businesses, aiming to stimulate economic growth within the county. Additionally, Singh supported the construction of a 60-bed emergency shelter to aid the county’s most vulnerable populations.
Upon his swearing-in, Singh expressed his dedication to his constituents, stating, “I will remain committed to ensuring the voices of everyday people in Burlington County and across New Jersey are heard in Trenton. I am excited to work alongside my new partners in the Legislature as we continue to build on efforts to make New Jersey a more equitable and prosperous place for all residents.”
Community Recognition and Support
Singh’s historic election has been celebrated across various communities, particularly among Sikh organizations. United Sikhs, a UN-affiliated global NGO, extended their congratulations, highlighting the significance of his achievement. In a statement, they remarked, “Congratulations to Assemblyman Balvir Singh, the first Sikh legislator in New Jersey state history! Your groundbreaking election represents a powerful milestone for representation and inclusion. As a champion of education, economic opportunity, and equitable access, you embody the spirit of community service and progress.”
A Vision for New Jersey’s Future
As he embarks on his legislative journey, Singh’s focus remains on fostering a more equitable and prosperous New Jersey. His background in education and public service positions him as a strong advocate for policies that enhance the quality of life for all residents. Speaker Coughlin emphasized Singh’s potential impact, stating, “Balvir is a stellar example of dedication to both community and state, and we are fortunate to welcome him into the General Assembly. His background in education and public service, combined with his strong commitment to improving lives, will undoubtedly make him a powerful advocate for his constituents and a key voice in the Caucus moving forward.”
Singh’s election not only marks a personal achievement but also signifies a broader step toward diversity and representation in government. His presence in the Assembly brings a unique perspective, enriching the legislative process and reflecting the diverse fabric of New Jersey’s population.
