Suspended Trinamool Congress legislator Humayun Kabir revealed Abul Hasan as the candidate for Ballygunge Assembly constituency in South Kolkata. Kabir, who recently formed the Janata Unnayan Party, had initially named Nisha Chatterjee but withdrew her candidacy due to social media photos concerns. Kabir, keeping his word to field a minority community candidate, chose his maternal uncle, Abul Hasan, a retired police officer.

Nisha Chatterjee expressed surprise at her removal as a candidate, alleging religious bias. Kabir, outlining his party’s future plans, mentioned contesting from Beldanga and Rejinagar in 2026. He also hinted at potential alliances with anti-Trinamool Congress and anti-BJP groups, emphasizing the importance of minority unity. Kabir specified the party logo preferences and color scheme for the upcoming elections.
